For Andrei Burak, modeling began as a side hustle while he climbed the ranks from lighting assistant to producer after moving from Belarus to Los Angeles five years ago. Despite participating in numerous photoshoots and walking in LA Fashion Week twice, he found the process often stressful due to long casting lines, probing questions from directors, and frequent rejections.
However, Burak's approach to modeling has transformed. Earlier this year, he uploaded a collection of selfies and professional shots to AI Fashion. This platform allows models to earn money by using their likenesses in AI-generated images for fashion campaigns and e-commerce sites. Burak now manages offers from brands through AI Fashion, approving or denying them as he sees fit. Once approved, the platform generates photos of him modeling the brand's apparel.
"It's a great opportunity," Burak says. AI Fashion provides him with passive income, allowing him to focus on running his production company.
Other startups use AI to generate model images, but AI Fashion distinguishes itself by keeping real models involved in the process. Co-founder and CEO Daniel Citron believes that brands will prefer this approach to maintain the human element and avoid the backlash associated with solely relying on AI models. For instance, Levi Strauss faced criticism for using virtual models instead of hiring real people from diverse backgrounds.
Doug Weiss, Senior Vice President of Digital, E-commerce, and AI for Anne Klein parent company WHP Global, highlights AI Fashion’s potential to create new opportunities for both models and brands. By keeping human creativity at the center, AI Fashion ensures that models like Mikaela Kelley and Leticia Jacobson can generate passive income while maintaining control over their images. Kelley, initially hesitant about AI, appreciates AI Fashion's focus on model autonomy and the ability to decline campaigns that don't align with her values. Jacobson, too, finds the platform beneficial, acknowledging AI's growing role in our lives and the financial benefits it can offer.
As AI becomes increasingly integral to the fashion industry, AI Fashion exemplifies how technology can enhance opportunities for models while keeping them at the heart of the creative process.
